History of Educational Technology

There is no written evidence which can tell us exactly who has coined the phrase educational technology. Different educationists, scientists and philosophers at different time intervals have put forwarded different definitions of Educational Technology. Educational technology is a multifaceted and integrated process involving people, procedure, ideas, devices, and organization, where technology from different fields of science is borrowed as per the need and requirement of education for implementing, evaluating, and managing solutions to those problems involved in all aspects of human learning.

Educational technology, broadly speaking, has passed through five stages.

The first stage of educational technology is coupled with the use of aids like charts, maps, symbols, models, specimens and concrete materials. The term educational technology was used as synonyms to audio-visual aids.

The second stage of educational technology is associated with the ‘electronic revolution’ with the introduction and establishment of sophisticated hardware and software. Use of various audio-visual aids like projector, magic lanterns, tape-recorder, radio and television brought a revolutionary change in the educational scenario. Accordingly, educational technology concept was taken in terms of these sophisticated instruments and equipments for effective presentation of instructional materials.

The third stage of educational technology is linked with the development of mass media which in turn led to ‘communication revolution’ for instructional purposes. Computer-assisted Instruction (CAI) used for education since 1950s also became popular during this era.

The fourth stage of educational technology is discernible by the individualized process of instruction. The invention of programmed learning and programmed instruction provided a new dimension to educational technology. A system of self-learning based on self-instructional materials and teaching machines emerged.

The latest concept of educational technology is influenced by the concept of system engineering or system approach which focuses on language laboratories, teaching machines, programmed instruction, multimedia technologies and the use of the computer in instruction. According to it, educational technology is a systematic way of designing, carrying out and evaluating the total process of teaching and learning in terms of specific objectives based on research.

Educational technology during the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age

Educational technology, despite the uncertainty of the origin of the term, can be traced back to the time of the three-age system periodization of human prehistory; namely the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age.

Duringthe Stone Age, ignition of fire by rubbing stones, manufacture of various handmade weapon and utensils from stones and clothing practice were some of the simple technological developments of utmost importance. A fraction of Stone Age people developed ocean-worthy outrigger canoe ship technology to migrate from one place to another across the Ocean, by which they developed their first informal education of knowledge of the ocean currents, weather conditions, sailing practice, astronavigation, and star maps. During the later Stone Age period (Neolithic period),for agricultural practice, polished stone tools were made from a variety of hard rocks largely by digging underground tunnels, which can be considered as the first steps in mining technology. The polished axes were so effective that even after appearance of bronze and iron; people used it for clearing forest and the establishment of crop farming.

Although Stone Age cultures left no written records, but archaeological evidences proved their shift from nomadic life to agricultural settlement. Ancient tools conserved in different museums, cave paintings like Altamira Cave in Spain, and other prehistoric art, such as the Venus of Willendorf, Mother Goddess from Laussel, France etc. are some of the evidences in favour of their cultures.

Neolithic Revolution of Stone Age resulted into the appearance of Bronze Age with development of agriculture, animal domestication, and the adoption of permanent settlements. For these practices Bronze Age people further developed metal smelting, with copper and later bronze, an alloy of tin and copper, being the materials of their choice.

The Iron Age people replaced bronze and developed the knowledge of iron smelting technology to lower the cost of living since iron utensils were stronger and cheaper than bronze equivalents. In many Eurasian cultures, the Iron Age was the last period before the development of written scripts.

Educational technology during the period of Ancient civilizations

According to Paul Saettler, 2004, Educational technology can be traced back to the time when tribal priests systematized bodies of knowledge and ancient cultures invented pictographs or sign writing to record and transmit information. In every stage of human civilization, one can find an instructional technique or set of procedures intended to implement a particular culture which were also supported by number of investigations and evidences. The more advanced the culture, the more complex became the technology of instruction designed to reflect particular ways of individual and social behaviour intended to run an educated society. Over centuries, each significant shift in educational values, goals or objectives led to diverse technologies of instruction.

The greatest advances in technology and engineering came with the rise of the ancient civilizations. These advances stimulated and educated other societies in the world to adopt new ways of living and governance.

The Indus Valley Civilization was an early Bronze Age civilization which was located in the northwestern region of the Indian Subcontinent. The civilization was primarily flourished around the Indus River basin of the Indus and the Punjab region, extending upto the Ghaggar-Hakra River valley and the Ganges-Yamuna Doab, (most of the part is under today’s Pakistan and the western states of modern-day India as well as some part of the civilization extending upto southeastern Afghanistan, and the easternmost part of Balochistan, Iran).

There is a long term controversy to be sure about the language that the Harappan people spoke. It is assumed that their writing was at least seems to be or a pictographic script. The script appears to have had about 400 basic signs, with lots of variations. People write their script with the direction generally from right to left. Most of the writing was found on seals and sealings which were probably used in trade and official & administrative work.

Harappan people had the knowledge of the measuring tools of length, mass, and time. They were the first in the world to develop a system of uniform weights and measures.

In a study carried out by P. N. Rao et al. in 2009, published in Science, computer scientists found that the Indus script’s pattern is closer to that of spoken words, which supported the proposed hypothesis that it codes for an as-yet-unknown language.

According to the Chinese Civilization, some of the major techno-offerings from China include paper, early seismological detectors, toilet paper, matches, iron plough, the multi-tube seed drill, the suspension bridge, the wheelbarrow, the parachute, natural gas as fuel, the magnetic compass, the raised-relief map, the blast furnace, the propeller, the crossbow, the South Pointing Chariot, and gun powder. With the invent of paper they have given their first step towards developments of educational technology by further culturing different handmade products of paper as means of visual aids.

Ancient Egyptian language was at one point one of the longest surviving and used languages in the world. Their script was made up of pictures of the real things like birds, animals, different tools, etc. These pictures are popularly called hieroglyph. Their language was made up of above 500 hieroglyphs which are known as hieroglyphics. On the stone monuments or tombs which were discovered and rescued latter on provides the evidence of existence of many forms of artistic hieroglyphics in ancient Egypt.

Educational technology during Medieval and Modern Period

Paper and the pulp papermaking process which was developed in China during the early 2nd century AD, was carried to the Middle East and was spread to Mediterranean by the Muslim conquests. Evidences support that a paper mill was also established in Sicily in the 12th century. The discovery of spinning wheel increased the productivity of thread making process to a great extent and when Lynn White added the spinning wheel with increasing supply of rags, this led to the production of cheap paper, which was a prime factor in the development of printing technology.

The invention of the printing press was taken place in approximately 1450 AD, by Johannes Gutenburg, a German inventor. The invention of printing press was a prime developmental factor in the history of educational technology to convey the instruction as per the need of the complex and advanced-technology cultured society.

In the pre-industrial phases, while industry was simply the handwork at artisan level, the instructional processes were relied heavily upon simple things like the slate, the horn book, the blackboard, and chalk. It was limited to a single text book with a few illustrations. Educational technology was considered synonymous to simple aids like charts and pictures.

The year 1873 may be considered a landmark in the early history of technology of education or audio-visual education. An exhibition was held in Vienna at international level in which an American school won the admiration of the educators for the exhibition of maps, charts, textbooks and other equipments.

Maria Montessori (1870-1952), internationally renowned child educator and the originator of Montessori Method exerted a dynamic impact on educational technology through her development of graded materials designed to provide for the proper sequencing of subject matter for each individual learner. Modern educational technology suggests many extension of Montessori’s idea of prepared child centered environment.

In1833, Charles Babbage’s design of a general purpose computing device laid the foundation of the modern computer and in 1943, the first computing machine as per hi design was constructed by International Business Machines Corporation in USA. The Computer Assisted instruction (CAI) in which the computer functions essentially as a tutor as well as the Talking Type writer was developed by O.K. Moore in 1966. Since 1974, computers are interestingly used in education in schools, colleges and universities.

In the beginning of the 19th century, there were noteworthy changes in the field of education. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), right from its start of school broadcasts in 1920 had maintained rapid pace in making sound contribution to formal education. In the USA, by 1952, 20 states had the provision for educational broadcasting. Parallel to this time about 98% of the schools in United Kingdom were equipped with radios and there were regular daily programmes.

Sidney L. Pressey, a psychologist of Ohio state university developed a self-teaching machine called ‘Drum Tutor’ in 1920. Professor Skinner, however, in his famous article ‘Science of Learning and art of Teaching’ published in 1945 pleaded for the application of the knowledge derived from behavioral psychology to classroom procedures and suggested automated teaching devices as means of doing so.

Although the first practical use of Regular television broadcasts was in Germany in 1929 and in 1936 the Olympic Games in Berlin were broadcasted through television stations in Berlin, Open circuit television began to be used primarily for broadcasting programmes for entertainment in 1950. Since 1960, television is used for educational purposes.

In 1950, Brynmor, in England, used educational technological steps for the first time. It is to be cared that in 1960, as a result of industrial revolution in America and Russia, other countries also started progressing in the filed of educational technology. In this way, the beginning of educational technology took place in 1960 from America and Russia and now it has reached England, Europe and India.

During the time of around 1950s, new technocracy was turning it attraction to educations when there was a steep shortage of teachers in America and therefore an urgent need of educational technology was felt. Dr. Alvin C. Eurich and a little later his associate, Dr. Alexander J. Stoddard introduced mass production technology in America.

Team teaching had its origin in America in the mid of 1950’s and was first started in the year 1955 at Harvard University as a part of internship plan.

In the year 1956, Benjamin Bloom from USA introduced the taxonomy of educational objectives through his publication, “The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, The Classification of Educational Goals, Handbook I: Cognitive Domain”.

In 1961, Micro teaching technique was first adopted by Dwight W. Allen and his co-workers at Stanford University in USA.

Electronics is the main technology being developed in the beginning of 21st century. Broadband Internet access became popular and occupied almost all the important offices and educational places and even in common places in developed countries with the advantage of connecting home computers with music libraries and mobile phones.

Today’s classroom is more likely to be a technology lab, a room with rows of students using internet connected or Wi-Fi enabled laptops, palmtops, notepad, or perhaps students are attending a video conferencing or virtual classroom or may have been listening to a podcast or taking in a video lecture. Rapid technological changes in the field of educational have created new ways to teach and to learn. Technological changes also motivated the teachers to access a variety of information on a global scale via the Internet, to enhance their lessons as well as to make them competent professional in their area of concern. At the same time, students can utilize vast resources of the Internet to enrich their learning experience to cope up with changing trend of the society. Now a days students as well teachers are attending seminars, conferences, workshops at national and international level by using the multimedia techno-resources like PowerPoint and even they pursue a variety of important courses of their choice in distance mode via online learning ways. Online learning facility has opened infinite number of doors of opportunities for today’s learner to make their life happier than ever before.

Concept of Higher Education of Executives in India

In India the concept of executive higher education is yet to catch. University education is making comeback, but this time with a difference. The students are top managers and executives. They will again revisit those left campuses again. Companies want their top manager to be update with current market trends and should not be left behind.

The objective of these executive learning programs is to provide government and corporate executives with realistic, practical and leadership education. That is relevant to their personal and professional goals. Corporate worldwide believe that they can sharpen the mental horizon of their executives by sponsoring these programs.

Executive education programs help companies create a smarter workforce with high rate of technology absorption. These programs provide managers with lot of scope for growth. India market which is poised to be one of worlds biggest should not miss this opportunity. However the concept of university education and company sponsored programs yet to catch up in India.

While every corporation has its executive development program course, workshops and seminars, few also encourage their executive to take a break and go to B-school. Says Mathew, HR manager, The oberoi,” Most of companies are not in position to send their executive and middle level managers to B-schools. There is a fear that they will return back to same organization or not.

Therefore in India companies look for shorter and more intense programs as compared to lengthy MBA or diploma. Companies also have the option of addressing only specific issues related to the business. Therefore the shorter and specific courses form some institutes is becoming more popular. However the instances of companies sponsoring the employ for long term course are very rare.

The choice of education platform depends upon the development needs and gaps in system. Companies require identifying these differences and selecting the right medium. However university education provides the employ with broader spectrum, which will be helpful in dealing with different situations. However it is cautioned that functional realities are some times different from but studied in campus. So the faculty should be more alive to these situations.

Experts believe a need for collaboration of corporate and education institutes to develop these courses. It is done then soon we will see top CEO mingling with nervous students at institutes. The process of learning is a never -ending one.

Improving Education With Technology

Change is deeper with technological developments. Just like other sectors of society, technology has an impact on the education sector. Its effects are mostly bordering on positive ones. Examples of the impact of technology in the education sector have developed by themselves in the case of online Mathematics. This is an Internet application that allows people to do math exercises.

The online Math Case is just one of the many ways technology is changing the educational landscape. This digital phenomenon has expanded its tentacles to all other fields in the education sector in various ways.
Many educational institutions have opened themselves to the idea of technology. Such schools have realised that technology is key in improving the delivery of education services. As such, technology has positively affected various strategies in the classroom. These include:

In the past, sandpits and cardboard boxes were the first thing that came to mind when talking about simulation. These teaching aids have been replaced with technological products, which have readily earned the approval of teachers. This has been evident in the case of Maths online where learners interact with graphical teaching aids like graphs, bar charts and videos among others.

Learners have developed an affinity for SMART boards and computers because these materials help them to understand various concepts. Imathsn the normal classroom setting, such concepts would sound gibberish to these consumers of education. Technology has simplified the process of demonstrating certain concepts to students. Without technology, students have a hard time grasping these concepts physically. Concepts that were hitherto invisible to the real eye have become clearly conceivable to students thanks to the digital components.

Teachers have benefited from the existence of technology since they can assess the progress of their students easier. A case in point is Maths online, which enables teachers to analyse the progress of learners and correct them when they are going wrong. The application has step-by-step instructions that enhance real-time assessment. This has accorded teachers with the chance to correct learners instantly. Moreover, they can intervene in the welfare of struggling learners and help them to improve on their grasp of concepts. The fact that teachers can assess students owes credence to technology. Efficient assessment of students has enabled teachers to tailor their teaching strategies in line with their students’ educational needs.

Technology has also assisted the education sector with efficient learning materials in the shape of epistemic games and learning materials. This has had the desired effect of unlocking the immense potential in various learners. Such learning materials allow people to share and store information. The learners are only too happy to interact with these digital learning materials. This is because they are spared from their usual heavy luggage consisting of numerous text books. This is reflective of Maths online, where students only need an Internet connection and a computer. Other than that, there is no need to carry loads of mathematical learning materials. There is no doubt that e-books have provided the education sector with a spark of innovativeness. Learners no longer have to miss out on great opportunities such as, visualizations, models or simulations.

The benefits of technology in the education sector have also manifested themselves through global learning. Here, students can exchange ideas with fellow students from other countries. In addition, technology has enhanced language learning by allowing people from different cultural backgrounds to learn about each other’s languages. This is possible thanks to video conferencing. This technology has increased social interaction while allowing students to gain exposure to other people’s cultures. Thanks to language exchange, global learning has become simpler. Students do not need to travel to other countries to learn certain languages.

Education System – Internet Influence

The internet has changed the way the world does things. This is another point in a long series of discoveries that are set to revolutionize lifestyles. Someone tends to ask, how can the ability of computers to talk to each other improve the learning process in the classroom? How does that make a difference in epoch studies like Odyssey and the Iliad? These questions and many more will be answered in the following sections. The internet has a broader effect than other electronic media and is an engine of modern progress; it is a new form of thinking that will show a new approach to online education.

Personal computers and the Information Superhighway are rapidly transforming America. Already, the Internet is making large amounts of information available at unprecedented speeds. When this revolution makes itself fully felt in schools, teachers and students will have virtually instantaneous access to vast amounts of information and a wide range of learning tools. If we guide the information revolution wisely, these resources will be available not only to affluent suburban schools but also to rural school districts and inner-city schools. Broad access can reduce differences in the quality of online education and give children in all areas new opportunities to learn. Used well, this transforming technology can play a major role in school reform.

The new technology will enable students to acquire the skills that are essential to succeed in modern society. Exposure to computer technology in school will permit students to become familiar with the necessary tools at an early age. By using the technology well, they will also acquire better thinking skills to help them become informed citizens and active community members.

The drive to integrate technology into our nation’s schools goes far beyond the Internet. If the Internet didn’t exist, advanced technology would still have so many valuable educational uses distance learning applications, collaborative learning, and so forth that far larger investments than are being contemplated would be justified.

Web resources are excellent tools for researches. Let’s not kid ourselves, however. Even if policymakers, practitioners, and parents did decide what their goals were and even if the research findings supported one of several configurations of hardware and software, deciding when, how, or if to use technology (or any other reform) in the classroom is not likely to be determined solely on these bases. Many other factors–ranging from parental pressure to superintendents wanting to leave their fingerprints on the district to technology corporations promoting their products–shape decisions to buy and allocate technologies to schools.

The Internet is an incredible information resource and a powerful communication tool. The ability to use new technologies is becoming a more important factor in career options, and the future success of today’s students will be more affected by their understanding of and ability to access and use electronic information. The increased use of on-line services in the home by children adds to the impetus for schools to take a more active role in family education regarding their use.

Schools have the potential to be access points and online educational centers for exploring Internet resources. Increased involvement of parents in school education programs can help address community concerns and can improve their children’s overall academic performance. If educators assume responsibility for helping students master the use of technology and educating them about potential risks, students will become more empowered to make intelligent choices.

Multicultural education relates to education and instruction designed for the cultures of several different races in an educational system. This approach to teaching and learning is based upon consensus building, respect, and fostering cultural pluralism within racial societies. Multicultural education acknowledges and incorporates positive racial idiosyncrasies into classroom atmospheres.

The concept of learning styles is rooted in the classification of psychological types. The different ways of doing so are generally classified as: Concrete and abstract perceivers and Active and reflective processors.

There are many academic and psychological issues do minority students encounter such as: low single head of household, low socioeconomic status, low minority group status, limited English proficiency, low-educational attainment of parents, mobility, and psychosocial factors.

Not only do school programs and practices have a direct impact upon student success, but the school and community contexts in which these programs and practices occur also affect success rates. “Context” is comprised of numerous factors. Some contextual variables can have a positive impact upon students, while others work against student success.

The call for total school reform strongly suggests that existing conceptions of education are inadequate for promoting multicultural equity. Unfortunately, these same conceptions have shaped the schooling of prospective teachers. Their education likely has been characterized by tracking (the process of assigning students to different groups, classes, or programs based on measures of intelligence, achievement, or aptitude), traditional instruction that appeals to a narrow range of learning styles, and curricula that exclude the contributions of women and people of diverse cultures. Competition drives this factory model of schooling, in which students tend to be viewed as products coming off an assembly line.

Education is a basic human process; it is a matter of values and actions. A technology cluster called the Internet has the ability to complement, strengthen and improve the educational process. This will bring the focus of education from the institution to students. The internet has come to make friends, live together, and live outside, both teachers and students. African wisdom says, “It takes an entire village to raise children”.

Charting a Curriculum – Educational Charity

The general suspicion will show anyone what the curriculum for an educational charity program should be. But one thing is certain; the curriculum is different from the conventional education curriculum for schools. So when we talk about the possible curriculum for the educational concept above, it is necessary to be careful enough to avoid misplacing the values that are really the core of the concept.

The first point to note in determining what the curriculum reference point for the concept of educational charity is is the fact that the type of education package offered here moves beyond equipping the poor and disadvantaged with book letters, but goes further by fully empowering them to be creatively productive as a way to overcome their biggest problems; poverty, hunger and disease.

Here, education is not about getting a formal certificate; rather it is intended to equip the individual with the essential skills and survival required that will enable him to have unimpeded access to a minimum decent life. It aims to empower the poor to break the chain of eternal dependence on external interventions and charity as a way to reduce the impact of poverty, hunger and disease on the poor. The educational charity center centers on practical learning that gives poor people direct access to the labor market directly or far away.

A proper understanding of the arrangements and target groups of the above educational concepts is also needed to be able to provide charitable services or effective interventions. For example, the curriculum of a program that has rural peasant women as its target will certainly be different from the curriculum of the educational intervention program which aims to empower rural youth economically through ICT and similar packages. In the same sense, an education program after such a means intended for children in the world’s poor will inevitably focus on basic education to achieve minimum literacy.

Teaching Concepts can be accessed

Continuing education is a useful endeavor for every professional educator. Teachers always have to adapt their teaching style to the times, and with each new generation students must make changes in the way the curriculum is taught to best serve students’ needs. Continuing education can be a difficult proposition if you are interested in learning less about new mathematical equations and more about new teaching concepts.

Concepts teaching is an art that requires the teacher to understand both the ways of the past and the ways of the future. The teacher must understand the past in order to best communicate with the educators taking their course, and must understand future concepts in order to pass this valuable information along. Indeed concepts teaching can be a train wreck when done poorly; however when executed well it provides educators with the knowledge and tools required to make a real difference in the classroom.

Finding ways to learn new teaching concepts is difficult with a teacher’s hectic schedule. They are typically up early in the morning preparing for class and then up late at night grading homework and tests. Online education courses make the prospect of continuing education much easier to swallow; specifically education programs that are not highly structured and are more free-form learned your own pace.

This program has all the information and tools available from traditional teacher workshops and classes, but with Internet prices that are usually low with relaxed internet schedules. In short, all of this is the need of busy teachers for their continuing education goals without any loss from going to brick-and-mortar facilities.
